During a water contamination crisis, a wealthy pregnant woman flees to a beautiful and shabby lakeside resort in the California mountains, where she falls in love with a younger woman who is starting her life over.
Summary
Fresh off a cross-country roadtrip, Kai goes broke and lands in Breakwater. Seeking shelter, she runs into Mallory, a wealthy pregnant woman with her own complicated past, who offers to share her room after Kai’s car gets mysteriously vandalized.
They quickly fall in love and their sudden intimacy becomes complicated by their age difference and Mallory’s anxieties about motherhood. Kai eavesdrops on an intimate phone call between Mallory and her absent partner Dree and starts to pull away. She befriends Sunny, the young manager of the local gas station, Nik, Sunny’s best friend and waitress at the local restaurant.
When Mallory’s long-term partner Dree arrives in Breakwater, the three women have an awkward dinner together witnessed by Nik that leaves Kai questioning her importance in Mallory’s life. Nik secretly drives Kai to Mallory and Dree’s house that evening where Kai witnesses the life Mallory and Dree have spent the last decade building together.
Kai begins to explore her independence by getting a job and starting a life in Breakwater. A jealous and anxious Mallory quickly acts out and a sudden revelation sparks a violent confrontation between Kai and the people she thought were her friends in Breakwater.
After a perilous evening hike, Mallory is forced to reconcile with her irresponsible actions after she becomes lost and Kai becomes injured while looking for her. In a moment of desperation, Mallory reveals she was the one who sabotaged Kai’s car in a bid to make Kai stay with her in Breakwater. Horrified by the deceit, Kai puts an end to the already fractured relationship.
Mallory returns to her own life to prepare for her child’s eventual birth and Kai explores a deeper friendship with Nik, she finally confronts her own insecurities and sets her car alight, committing herself to a future with a new type of love and community in Breakwater.

JULIA FOX - Mallory
Fox is known for her debut performance in the 2019 film Uncut Gems where she starred alongside Adam Sandler, for which she was nominated for the Breakthrough Actor Award at the 2019 Gotham Awards.
Fox also wrote and directed Fantasy Girls and starred in Ben Hozie’s PVT Chat, and in No Sudden Move which were all released in 2021.
She starred in the drama movie Puppet (2022) and is also set to portray Carrie White in upcoming biopic Upper Cut.
Fox is set to star in The Trainer opposite Vito Schnabel, who also writes, and Steven Van Zandt, led by director Tony Kaye. Fox will also star in Steven Soderbergh’s 2024 film Presence alongside Lucy Liu.
She has since appeared in campaigns for Tiffany & Co., Diesel, Coach New York, and Supreme; and in editorials for CR Fashion Book, The Last, Office, Wonderland, Vogue, Vogue Italia The Face, V, and Interview.

ASHLEY MOORE - Kai
Ashley Moore (born 15 June 1993) is a well-known Film Actress and Model. She is recognized for I Know What You Did Last Summer (2021) where she played Riley, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016), and Rule of Thirds (2022).
Moore starred in her most recent film Festival of the Living Dead (2024) and is the lead in Salvation currently in post production (2024).
Moore also appeared in music videos including Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” in 2013, and more recently, Kygo’s “Not OK” in 2019.
LIO MEHIEL - Sunny
Lío Mehiel is a Puerto Rican and Greek non-binary, transgender actor. Lío made their feature film debut as the lead role in MUTT, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Their critically acclaimed performance won them the Special Jury Award for Acting, making them the first trans actor to ever win the award. The film can be streamed on Netflix.
Lío returned to Sundance 2024, starring opposite Leslie Grace, Sasha Calle and Residente in In the Summers, which won the festival’s top honor of Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition.
As a filmmaker, Lío produced CHAPERONE, a queer short film which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. They wrote, directed, produced, and starred in DISFORIA, a short film which premiered at the 2018 Outfest Film Festival.
Lío is currently the producer and creative director of the transgender sculpture collection, Ancient Futures/Angels, works most recently showed at GUTS Gallery in London. They are the co-founder of Voyeur Productions.
